Bangladesh Deploys AI Traffic Enforcement System: Lessons for Pakistan's Smart Cities
Bangladesh has launched an AI-powered traffic enforcement system in Dhaka to reduce congestion and improve road safety. Explore how Pakistan can adopt similar AI solutions to modernize traffic management.

Bangladesh Uses AI to Ease Traffic Congestion; A Model Pakistan Could Follow
Bangladesh has taken a significant step toward modernizing urban transportation by introducing its first artificial intelligence (AI)-powered traffic enforcement system in Dhaka, one of the world's most congested cities.
The densely populated capital, home to more than 22 million people, is notorious for severe traffic jams, where buses, cars, motorcycles, and rickshaws compete for limited road space. Traffic violations such as signal jumping, illegal lane changes, and disregard for pedestrian crossings have long posed challenges for authorities.
Previously, traffic management relied heavily on manual enforcement, often leading to disputes between motorists and police officers. Traffic personnel frequently faced confrontations when issuing fines, and in some cases, drivers ignored instructions altogether.
To address these issues, Dhaka police connected citywide traffic cameras to an AI-powered monitoring system in April. The technology automatically detects traffic violations, records evidence, and supports enforcement actions without requiring direct interaction between drivers and officers.
According to traffic officials, the system has already encouraged better compliance with traffic laws and reduced unnecessary conflicts on the roads. The automated approach allows officers to focus on traffic management rather than routine enforcement.
What Pakistan Can Learn
Major Pakistani cities such as Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, and Peshawar face similar challenges, including traffic congestion, reckless driving, illegal parking, and frequent violations of traffic rules. AI-powered traffic management could help address these issues in several ways:
The Road Ahead
As urban populations continue to grow, traditional traffic management methods are becoming increasingly ineffective. Bangladesh's adoption of AI demonstrates how technology can improve road safety, reduce congestion, and enhance enforcement efficiency. If implemented strategically, similar AI-driven solutions could help Pakistan modernize its transportation infrastructure and create safer, more efficient roads for millions of commuters.
