The devastation and shocking memories of the October 8, 2005 earthquake in Azad Kashmir and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa remain 15 years later.


The quake affected Muzaffarabad district of Azad Kashmir and most parts of Bagh. The quake knocked down part of Margalla Towers in Islamabad.


Muzaffarabad State Disaster Management Authority has organized an earthquake awareness walk.

The purpose of the walk is to raise awareness among the people about natural disasters and prevention. The walk was also attended by school children and people with disabilities.

Fifteen years have passed since the catastrophic earthquake of October 8, 2005. The quake killed more than 70,000 people. Massive destruction occurred in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Kashmir.

Terrible tremors destroyed the settlements in an instant. The quake struck at a depth of 15 km with a magnitude of 7.6. Aftershocks continued for several days after the quake. The quake destroyed 95 percent of Balakot's infrastructure.

Muzaffarabad was also devastated. Thousands were affected in Bagh, Hazara and Rawalpindi. The quake also displaced 2.8 million people.



The quake killed more than 80,000 people and injured thousands, while many areas were wiped out.

At 8:52 am in the month of Ramadan, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake shook Muzaffarabad, Bagh, Neelum Valley, Chakoti and other areas in which more than 10 tehsils of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (now NWFP) were wiped out. 



The epicenter was reported at 95 km from the federal capital Islamabad between Attock and Hazara divisions. The quake destroyed hundreds of thousands of homes. The Muzaffarabad area was the hardest hit by the 2005 earthquake, which destroyed houses, schools, colleges, offices, hotels, hospitals, markets, and plazas in the blink of an eye.



The determination of the earthquake victims was appreciated at the international level and financial assistance was given to Pakistan from all over the world after the immense loss of life and property.

At the request of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, the Saudi people sent 350 million Saudi riyals and 2,000 tons of daily necessities to the earthquake victims of Pakistan.
